Hey :) How have you been lately?

Congrats, none-the-less... I don't underestimate the difficulty required in gettting your feet behind your head. It certainly is not something that everyone can do, otherwise i am certain that you would see a lot more of them...

But doing that has gotten the reputation of being a trick, or a partry manoevre, or a somethign just for fun and kicks....

The first time i got it comfortably was a turning point, because it was the first i achieved flexibility wise, once i got that, i got the necessary motivation to keep working on splits and other things... Its with the pretzel that it all started for me...

It is still very noble to start getting those! I always get the impression that people who did gymnastics never do lose their flexibility. Well they have less of it, but its not that they are stiff, and are still probably more flexible than the average person. That is something i still can't seem to figure out...

So how did it go with your putting your feet behind your head?

145 degrees is pretty good! I was on 135 degrees for the longest time in the straddle against a wall, and then that quickly went up to about 145 degrees. I had two sessions that it went really well, but aside from those two, it has been quite slow. But i think middles have a different set of muscles at work than i am usually (using), or probably have ever used, lol...

Putting your feet behind your head is quite rewarding. I could do those before i could do frontsplits... So that was really what kept me motivated and encouraged for the longest period of time. But there is also a set of muscles that need to be stretched and worked to make the pretzel possible. Although they are not as difficult to strertch and warm up for as for the middles...

Good luck with your dissertation! I have 4 months before my thesis is due, and i suspect that its probably going to be my end, both mentally and physically... So i understand what you mean when you that there isn't room for anything else.

Was your mom successful? i am guessing she was, as a symbol of hope...

Thanks! My back was killing me the next day, especially the upper part and the shoulders... I haven't done that in awhile...

I know that it can be disheartening, especially when you don't progress as fast as you would have liked. Have you had it stable at 145 degres? coz mine go up and down, when they are good, they feel so close, and when they are bad, its like i haven't stretched a day in my life. And i know age should be a factor, but have you ever thought that that might play a part of it. I was thinking too, that how many 26 year olds do i know who still do this. and there aren't many... which probably also explains why i am so sore today, even though that was done on saturday evening. Alhtough i am feelign a bit sick today, so i might have a cold...

and it also doesn't help how easy it is for the teenagers to do... it really doesn't help our cause at all... lol

I think hectic is a very applicable word to use in our situation(s)... My research proposal needs to be in soon, and i handed in a preliminary draft yesterday. So the last week i have been working my ass off. The only aspect i have been neglecting the last 2 weeks are my friends :( which i feel terrible about, but luckily they are also busy. Congrats on getting the left and right back, thats awesome!

So far my program to get those middles are well on their way. There really seems to be spurts and then nothing, and then a spurt and then nothing. I can be discouraging, but if i just keep in mind how much i have progressed thus far. I always knew that it wasn't going to be an overnight success story...

Hey! so how are you? How is your training going?

I agree!! The problem that we who have been studying for so long face, is that we often end up in academia, just because we aren't really qualified to do anything else. By that stage we really don't have much working experience, or any real working commitment aside from the piece jobs done here and there, working here for awhile and working there for awhile. So i really lack the stable cv... So academia is probably the only thing we end up being qualified for :(

I have to agree completely with your point on this matter. While you are studying you have time to do these sorts of activities. But when you have to do the 9-5 soul killing labor, you don't have energy at the end of the day to be going to a gym and still be motivated... But that is probably my bias of working 9-5 showing. I have seen that with my studies, i am not very good in the mornings, i am cranky and moody, and only really to into motion at 10 am, and then i am talking about waking up. I work best in the afternoons and then into the night, going to be at around 2 am... This is the system i prefer, at which i feel at my most comfortable, and throwing that out of sync, would probably be the end of me at this stage... [pardon my mellodrama]

Atleast it sounds like you had a great time! Which is probably the best you could have hoped for. That is always the problem i have when beginning a new class, is that i don't know what to expect at all... I am not surprised that there wasn't any (focussed) stretching done, but i did assume that there would have been some warm up stretching done. Joining the adult ballet class could also be fun, but it might be a bit of a drastic change of pace to what you are used to at the moment, between the intense aerobics and the gymnastics....
