for back catches, i am probably not the one to ask. haha. extensions? got ya. do you mean lifting your leg up without holding it? first, do your splits and lean over your front leg. to build strength, do grand battements..try and sustain the height for as long as you can. um...another thing to try is to hold your leg up as high as you can, and then let go and see if you can hold it there. for arabesques, just really work on squeezing your butt and your back.
